I recently reread Betsy and the Boys by Caroline Haywood. Betsy goes through all sorts plotting to get the boys to let her play football on their team. She is ultimately successful, but when she gets her clothes dirty playing football, her mother buys her a pair of ice skates and arranges for Betsy to have skating lessons during the time when the football team generally plays. What a disappointing turn of events! Still, given that the book was published in 1945, I guess I should be glad that Betsy got to play football at all, even if only for a brief while.
