More Final Words

Before the subject of sports disappears from the CCBC Net altogether, I wanted to thank everybody for the input on kids' sports reading in general and girls' interests in particular. It will be a great help to me as I plan future projects.
If anyone is interested in learning more about the development of women's sports fiction over the years, I wanted to suggest an excellent article by Joli Sandoz, who teaches at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. The article, called "Strong, Cool, and Brave: Constructing the Female Athlete in U.S. Women's Sports Fiction Through 1977," covers some writing for children, too. It appeared in the Fall 1997 issue of Aethlon: The Journal of Sport Literature, which is published by East Tennessee State University Press. That issue focused entirely on writing by and about women in sports. If you have trouble finding the issue or the article, e-mail me for help.
One last thing: This fall Holt will publish my new book, Play Like a Girl: A Celebration of Women in Sports, compiled with Jane Gottesman. It's a picture book that combines contemporary photos of women playing sports with some compelling quotes (from various sources) that capture the emotions of training and competing. I hope it inspires your readers as much as it did us. Sue Macy SueMacy1 at aol.com
