The timing of this discussion is perfect. I work as an administrator at Whitman College, but since I'm an author and the Educ Dept was short-handed, I was let into the classroom this fall to teach Children's Literature (brave of them!) We've been doing a mock Caldecott with books I managed to beg or buy. Today during our deliberations, I simply could NOT get my four groups of about five students each to stop arguing passionately about their choices.
Of the books we read, their hands-down favorite was NO, DAVID!, followed by Robert Burleigh's HOME RUN. They liked Douglas Florian's INSECTLOPEDIA (one of my favorites), but were decidedly lukewarm about TO EVERY THING THERE IS A SEASON (same goes for ARLENE SARDINE).
I almost wish a "short list" existed, so my students could compare their analyses directly with the final choices. In any case, I'm sure they'll all take a greater interest in the award in the future.
