While you're looking for the biography Martha Graham: A Dancer's Life by Russell Freedman suggested by others, I urge you to find two other superb books about real people:

1) a biography titled Restless Spirit: The Life and Works of Dorothea Lange written by Elizabeth Partridge (Viking, 1998) - an energetic and energizing photo-essay using an immense amount of primary source material concerning the photographer whose Depres sion era photos actually changed public policy - wow, what a woman! (upper elem and middle school) and

2) an autobiography titled Looking Back: A Book of Memories written by Lois Lowry
(Houghton Mifflin, 1998) - a self-portrait written with humor and insight; carefully written words and selected photos with brief excerpts from Lowry's varied writings for a ll ages - wow, what a writer! and what good judgment she used in writing for children about her adult life passages! (elem and middle school).

I second Eliza Dresang's appreciation for If the Moon Could Talk. Wow, what a marvelous picture book and what a terrific idea to combine it for a gift with Goodnight, Moon!

More favorites? Keep 'em coming! .... Ginny
