Hi. My name is Greg Holch, and this is my first venture onto CCBC-NET or any online conversation. I'm the Senior Editor/Manager of Scholastic's Teen Age Book Club (TAB) for students in seventh grade and up. This basically means that I pick the books that go on the TAB Book Club.
There are three books that I would like to see win the Newbery Medal. The first is HOLES by Louis Sachar. I have worked with the author but never met him. This feels like a breakthrough book for him, and I would like to see him dispel the myth that a book cannot win both the National Book Award and the Newbery Medal.
The second book is BAT 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff. I have met the author, but never worked with her. I feel she successfully met the challenge of writing with many voices, and she is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
The third book is NO PRETTY PICTURES by Anita Lobel. I have never met the author nor worked with her, but this is a book whose scenes have kept coming back to me over and over long after I finished reading it.
In my shopping basket for the holidays are several additional books. REGARDING THE FOUNTAIN by Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise was the funniest novel I have read all year. THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND by Woody Guthrie and illustrated by Kathy Jakobsen showed up at the exact moment that my wife asked me to find a picture book for our daughter based on a Woody Guthrie song. WHEN MINDY SAVED HANUKKAH by Eric A. Kimmel and illustrated by Barbara McClintock is one of the best holiday stories our family has found this year.
And finally, I am buying multiple copies of THE THINGS WITH WINGS by Gregory J. Holch to give as gifts because... because it is the first book I have ever written. In case you haven't come across it, it's a fantasy novel for 8 year-olds, and it's about flying and friendship, butterflies and books. It was published this past May. Thank you very much. Happy New Year to all.
