Apropos of American bookbuying habits or 1998 favorites, or perhaps just a curious fact: For the past two weeks I have been reading Louis Sachar's "Holes" aloud to my 15 6th graders (11 boys) a few chapters at a time but not every day. We have reached chapter 14. Two have already gone out and bought their own hardback copies and finished the book. These are, of course, relatively privileged children in an independent school whose families probably have the means and the habit of such purchases. Still, I think it is a remarkable testament to the power of that book. The two who have finished it thought it both hilarious and sad and are happily listening, still.
