Two books top my 98 non-fiction list: "Talking with Adventurers," compiled and edited by Pat and Linda Cummings. It uses the same idea as Pat C's "Talking with Artists" books: a dozen or so people answer the same set of questions in their own words. The people in this case are anthropologists, wildlife filmmakers, underwater photographers and other modern day "explorers." They're all good writers (or the Cummingses are very good editors) so each person's life seems exciting and inspiring, without being too preachy.

Then there's "Walter Wick's Optical Tricks," which I hope will get some Caldecott consideration. Amazingly creative photographs demonstrate optical illusions. Some are similar to illusions you find in other books, but the fact that these are photographs makes them all new. He uses light and placement in wonderful ways, and the explanations of how the illusions work are very clear.
