The outcome of the CCBC Caldecott Discussion on December 3 suggests four strong favorites for the 1999 Randolph Caldecott Award for distinguished illustration - and for personal gift buying, as well. Each of the four is quite different from the other. Our choices offer four examples of
"distinguished" illustration. After discussion and balloting, a very strong group consensus for the Winner emerged.

The CCBC Caldecott Discussion Winner is:

Snow - written and illustrated by Uri Schulevitz (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1998) There are many reasons why this marvelous book for family reading with preschoolers was our overwhelming favorite! In short, we agreed that Snow is a perfect picture book in every respect!

We selected three Caldecott Discussion Honor Books:

1) John Willy and Freddy McGee - written and illustrated by Holly Meade
(Marshall Cavendish, 1998);

2) Lucy Dove - retold by Janice Del Negro and illustrated by Leonid Gore
(A Melanie Kroupa Book / DK Ink, 1998); and

3) My Name Is Georgia: A Portrait - written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter (Silver Whistle / Harcourt Brace, 1998).

We welcome your comments about each of these books, and we'll share ours, as well. Ginny Moore Kruse (gmkruse at ccbc.soemadison.wisc.edu) Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) A Library of the School of Education (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/) University of Wisconsin - Madison Phone: 608&3720
