My favorite 1998 book is Bloomability by Sharon Creech. I haven't been able to keep up on all the favorites, so this book may have been mentioned already. Sharon Creech visited our school district this fall so I had the chance to get some of the inside story of the making of this wonderful book. The book deals with several themes as seen through the eyes of a 13 year old girl - homesickness, optomism and pessimism, and most of all bloomabilities
(opportunities). The story is about a child from a dysfunctional family who is "kidnapped" by her aunt and uncle and taken to Switzerland where she attends an international school at which her uncle is headmaster. Through her relationships with students at the school and her unique school experiences, she learns much about herself and dealing with life's problems. This is Sharon Creech's first book published in America. Her European books were about life in America and her first American book is about life in Switzerland - as she said, when she is in America she misses England and when she is there, she is homesick for America.
