Dear all, I have been looking over my list of books I read aloud this school year and I am happy to see so many books that I think will stand the test of time. Here are some of my favorites from 1998:

1. *Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth and Chris Soentpiet 2. Home Run by Robert Burleigh and Mike Wimmer 3. The Brave Little Parrot by Rafe Martin and Susan Gaber 4. *Starting School by Johanna Hurwitz 5. The Sky is Always in the Sky by Karla Kuskin and Isabelle Dervaux 6. Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and Mary Azarian 7. Faraway Summer by Johanna Hurwitz 8. Hurry, hurry, Mary Dear by NM Bodecker and Erik Blegvad 9. Little Farm by the Sea by Kay Chorao 10. Snow by Uri Shulevitz 11. A Band of Angels by Deborah Hopkinson 12. *Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne 13. *The Greatest Treasure by Demi 14. The Dog Who Walked with God by Michael J Rosen and Stan Fellows 15. Beaten by a Balloon by Margaret Mahy and Jonathan London 16. *You Never Know by Francine Prose and Mark Podwal 17. *Bless Us All by Cynthia Rylant 18. Gentle Giant Octopus by Karen Wallace and Mike Bostock 19. Pete's a Pizza by William Steig 20. *Sister Anne's Hands by Margaret Lorbiecki and K. Wendy Papp

The titles with stars are the ones that work particularly well in the classroom with oral and written discussion. I teach grade 2, but I have passed these on to teachers of older children in my school.
I was thrilled that you all loved Snow as much as I did. I have always loved Uri Schulevitz. The Treasure was a favorite book to give to adults. I love giving picture books to adult family members almost as much as I love receiving them!
I am glad to read such fine reviews of You Never Know. It is a terrific book for any group. The illustrations perfectly complement the Jewish tale. My students were completely taken with it. A Band of Angels (about the Fisk University Jubilee Singers and how they saved the university) is not actually out in stores yet, but look for it when it is!

        Happy reading,
