A favorite YA novel from 1998 I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is Pirate's Son by Geraldine McCaughrean, published by Oxford Univ Press. I loved this rich adventure story about 2 penniless English orphans who follow a dashing young man (son of a notorious pirate) to his home in Madagascar hoping to make a new life there. Wonderful characters and description, lots of swashbuckling and twists & turns of plot and fate.
I also liked The Sacrifice by Diane Matchek, published by Farrar. About an 18th cent Native American girl who is convinced she has a great destiny and goes on a perilous quest to find it. Takes place partly in what is now Yellowstone and has lots of interesting and I believe authentic historical and tribal details.
Just a quick end of year thanks for all the information and opinions on this great listserv. As a children's bookseller I love seeing everyone else's thoughts on books, and finding out about new books I might have missed.
