End of month announcement: 1998 Jane Addams Children's Book

The 1998 Jane Addams Children's Book Award Winners and Honor Books will be formally presented to the honored authors, illustrators or their representatives by the Jane Addams Peace Association on Friday, December 11, 3:30-5:00p.m. This event will take place at the Church Center for the United Nations, 777 United Nations Plaza, 2nd floor, (corner of 44th Street and 1st Avenue), in New York City.

Winner, Picture Book Category - Seven Brave Women written by Betsy Hearne and illustrated by Bethanne Andersen (Greenwillow Books, 1997) Honor Book, Picture Book Category - Celebrating Families written and illustrated with photographs by Rosmarie Hausherr (Scholastic Press, 1997) Honor Book, Picture Book Category - Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story written by Ken Mochizuki and illustrated by Dom Lee with an afterword by Hiroki Sugihara. The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards have been presented annually since 1953 (Longer Book Category) and 1993 (Picture Book Category) by the Jane Addams Peace Association, Inc., to the children's books of the preceding year that most effectively promote the cause of peace, social justice and world community. The Jane Addams Peace Association is the educational affiliate of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, founded in 1915 with Jane Addams, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, as the first WILPF president.
