On December 7, ten of the books eligible for the actual John Newbery Award at the Cooperative Children's Book Center. There was a clear consensus on the part of the participants, and the results were very close. Two absolutely marvelous books were selected:

CCBC Newbery Discsusion Winner:

Holes written by Louis Sachar (Frances Foster / Farrar Straus Giroux, 1998)

CCBC Newbery Discussion Honor Book:

Bat 6 written by Virginia Euwer Wolff (Scholastic Press, 1998)

Perhaps someone who participated in the discussion will share some of the appreciation expressed last evening for each of these fine books. Maybe later... At this moment, I don't have the time to do justice
(ahem!) to either of them, as excited as I am about how provocative each is on a first reading and how much each book can offer upon repeated readings as well as at various times.

By the way, no one mentioned (out loud, anyway) during the discussion that yesterday was the anniversary of "Pearl Harbor Day." ...Ginny Ginny Moore Kruse (gmkruse at ccbc.soemadison.wisc.edu) Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) A Library of the School of Education (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/) University of Wisconsin - Madison
