One of the things that stands out in 1998 is the number of high-quality, original board books aimed at babies and toddlers. If you're looking for a book for a baby who already has "Goodnight Moon" and most everything by Donald Crews, I highly recommend new titles in the Harper Growing Tree series, especially:

"Cow Moo Me" by Stephen Losordo
"Do You Know New?" by Jean Marzollo
"My Aunt Came Back" by Pat Cummings
"Zoom City" by Thacher Hurd.

"Zoom City" was chosen by the New York Times as one of the year's best illustrated children's books, which is an unusual accomplishment for a board book.

It's refreshing to see this new crop of board books, after so many years of seeing mostly re-issued, shrunk-down, truncated board book editions of best-selling picture books.
