I know it's November, but I can't help but think that Lewis Carroll's
ALICE books were the great-granddaddy of them all in terms of
non-linear thinking. And he a mathematician! And Victorian too.
Which suggests we have long been able to process non-linear
information. It is something we have to do to make sense of our
existence. We choose to impose order within books because we can't
impose order on life.
