On Tuesday, November 24, a discussion about the ALA/OLOS Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award and some of the c1998 books eligible for the 1999 CSK Illustrator Award was held in the Cooperative Children's Book Center. As a result of CCBC partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District, half of the participants were MMSD teachers and library media specialists.

After more than three hours of discussion, the group cast individual ballots for this straw vote. Each person voted for three books from the discussion list (for list, see: www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/). Books with first place votes were tallied as four points each; books with second place votes garnered three points apiece; and books with third place votes were valued at two points. Through this balloting method, the group reached a clear consensus of appreciation:

Winning Illustrator: Brian Pinkney for illustrations for the book Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra written by Andrea Davis Pinkney (Hyperion, 1998) 32 pages.

Honor Book Illustrators: 1) Rod Rown for paintings in the book From Slave Ship to Freedom Road written by Julius Lester (Dial, 1998) 40 pages. 2) Jerry Pinkney for illustrations for the book Black Cowboy, Wild Horses: A True Story written by Julius Lester (Dial, 1998) 40 pages.

The actual 1999 ALA/OLOS Coretta Scott King Awards will be announced on Monday morning, February 1. That day the results will be available on the ALA website, and they will also be announced on CCBC-Net.
