I've been thinking about the design and narrative voice of Making Up Megaboy, and wondering how this relates to current technologies. It seems to me that the nonlinear feel and format of this book exist within the faster, more disjointed world of media which we see today.

My question is, is a book like this a contemporary phenomenon? Are there older books that have the same feel, or that break the same rules? How much do the internet, MTV, cd-roms, television, and all of those competing, nonlinear technologies, have to do with the development of this kind of book?
