I agree with Nina that Fleischman makes the structure of books like Seed Folks and Whirligig so apparent, that like buildings we see everyday, they the scaffolding then recedes, even disappears, and we can see the characters walking around in the structure more clearly. My quibble with Whirligig is that one would have expected the central "construction worker" of this building to come through most strongly, but I never really felt I knew Brent as a person any better than I did some of his fellow story-builders. He was there the whole time and I even watched him grow and change, but for me, that didn't build empathy. He was one of the crew building this structure that, in the end, was the most impressive part of the book.
