1) Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks will give the 1998 Hilldale Lecture for the Humanities on Wednesday, October 7, 7:00 p.m., at the State Historical Society Auditorium, 816 State St. Free to all, no tickets or pre-registration required. Arrive early for a seat. Parking is available in the nearby Lake St. Parking Ramp. (Questions? Call the UW-Madison Afro-American Studies Dept. 608/26342.)

2) Gwendolyn Brooks will also give a Poetry Reading on Thursday, October 8, 3:30 p.m., in 4207 Helen C. White Hall (Commons of the School of Library & Information Studies), Corner of N. Park and Observatory Drive on campus. (See details above) Ms. Brooks will autograph books following the reading. The CCBC is one of many campus departments and units co-sponsoring Ms. Brooks' appearances during these two days. Free to all, no tickets or pre-registration required. Arrive early for a seat.

3) CCBC "Brown Bag After School" Multicultural Literature Workshops for Teachers will be held 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Memorial Union on campus as follows: Mon., Oct. 19 Books by & about American Indians; Tues., Nov. 3, Books by & about Asians & Asian Americans; and Wed., Nov. 11, Books by & about Africans & African Americans. 4) The Friends of the CCBC Fall Book Sale will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, in 4207 Helen C. White Hall, Corner N. Park & University Ave. Metered parking in two ramps under the building. The building opens at 7:00 a.m. Members of the Friends may enter the sale beginning 8:00 a.m. All others are welcome between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. You may join the Friends of the CCBC that day at the door for early entry. Prices of most of the nearly new books for children and young adults: $3.00 hardcovers
& $1.00 paperbacks. (Questions? Call evenings or weekends: Kathy _at_ 608/274c39; long distance calls will be returned as collect calls. Be prepared to leave a message as to what time during an evening or weekend you can receive a return call.)

5) Artist/author Jan Spivey Gilchrist will give a public lecture on campus on Monday, Nov. 9, 7:00 p.m., in 4207 Helen C. White Hall, corner N. Park & Observatory Drive. Ms. Gilchrist illustrated the Coretta Scott King winner written by Eloise Greenfield "Nathaniel Talking" and many other books including Ms. Greenfield's "First Pink Light" and "Night on Neighborhood Street" and James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" as well as Indigo and Moonlight Gold which Ms. Gilchrist also wrote. Books will be available for purchase at special events prices, and Ms. Gilchrist will autograph books following the lecture. All are welcome. Free, no tickets or pre-registration required. 6) A CCBC Workshop "Reading the Americas: Latino Literature for Children and Teenagers" will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Wisconsin Memorial Union on campus. For all registration information, contact Linda Shriberg (see announcement #3 above).

7) Encourage the Wisconsin children & young teenagers you know to join in the annual Wisconsin Family Read-in in one or both of the following ways: a) phone to talk about one of your favorite books during the live call-in program on Wisconsin Public Radio co-hosted by Jonathan Overby & Ginny Moore Kruse on Sat., Nov. 21, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., and/or b) during October: complete a form available at your library or school telling about one of your favorite books; all who send in this form will receive mail containing a CCBC list of suggested new books for future reading & selected written comments will be read aloud during the call-in program on 11/21. Co-sponsored by the Wis. Dept. of Public Instruction & Wis. Public Radio with the support of the Wis. Education Assoc. Council, Wis. Retired Educators' Assoc., Wis. PTA, Wis. 8) Participate in one or more of the annual CCBC Book Award Discussions to be held in the CCBC between 5:10 - 9:10 p.m. on the following evenings: a) Tues., Nov. 24: Coretta Scott King, Illustrator; b) Thurs., Dec. 3: Caldecott; c) Mon., Dec. 7: Newbery; d) Wed., Dec. 9: Coretta Scott King, Author; and e) Tues., March 16: Americas Awards. The annual Batchelder Award Discussion will be held on Fri., Dec. 4, 3:30-5:30 pm.

9) Save these dates for next year: October 7-9, 1999, to come to Madison, Wisconsin! At that time, the CCBC will co-host the IBBY Regional Children's & Young Adult Literature Conference sponsored by the U.S. Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) and present the second annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture.
