Pardon my tardiness on this non?BC net announcement. With all the excitement of the first annual Charlotte Zolotow award and meeting one of my all-time favorite children's writers (Vera Williams), I am 3 days late in announcing the two wonderful authors visiting Pooh Corner bookstore this month. Please note that I choose to announce these because as a follower of children's literature, I'm intrigued by the authors and know that I would enjoy knowing the whereabouts of my favorite writers and illustrators. Similarly, it brings to this group a perspective on what at least one bookstore thinks is important enough to promote.
Walter Mayes, who we heard participating in the CCBC-NET Arlene discussion last month, visits Pooh Corner, Madison West, on Sunday, October 11, at 2:30 pm. Walter visits wearing two hats. First as the co-author of one of the best children's resource guides I've ever seen -- Valerie and Walter's Best Books for Children. The book is appropriately organized by reading AND listening levels, and briefly discusses a few thousand of their favorites. The last 225 pages of this book is worth the book and more-so. It is an appendix organized by theme and gives titles to books that match the theme. For example, you are looking for a book on death, or siblings, or you know certain children love books on horses, nature, or adventure, look these terms up and Valerie and Walter give titles that might meet your needs. All librarians, teachers, and parents should check out this great new book.
Walter also wears the hat of Walter the Giant Storyteller. He performs picture books like no other - bringing characters and sentiments to life. Having heard him perform before, he has changed the way I read certain books and will inspire all that get the chance to watch him.
The other author visiting Pooh Corner this month is Holly Hobbie -- yes, the same person famed for Holly Hobbie dolls and so forth. Now she has written two delicious picture books about two friends who are pigs -- Toot and Puddle. The first book, Toot & Puddle, teaches friendship, months of the year, and correspondence like no other book. All elementary-school teachers and librarians should check out this book if they haven't. The sequal, A Present for Toot, continues to reinforce friendship with a really sweet story and very attractive water colors. Holly Hobbie visits Pooh Corner Madison West on Thursday, October 22, at 4:00 PM -- but I know is touring in the east and mid-west too.
I hope no one minds me posting these notices. I appreciate your interest in author tours.
