Friends: Haven't read RED SHIFT yet (will, I promise), but Linnea's description made me think of what may be a similar confluence of narrative strands in Jennifer Armstrong's DREAMS OF MAIRHE MEHAN (think I have that right)--in one scene the pov switches between Mairhe, in a Civil War Washington bar, and her brother, who is becoming part of a developing battle. The language and dialogue run parallel in eerie ways; it's a haunting moment, in a haunting book whose audience I still can't pin down (but so what--I'm still happy that it was written and published).
