This is in response to Michele Missner's comment do teachers read? What kind of a question is that? Not only am I out there reading children's books, I am also trying to find time to read books that I enjoy. As a fifth grade teacher in a rural school, my goal is to introduce the kids to as many books as I possibly can. That includes some books that were touted in my education classes, but it certainly is not limited to those books. I simply can not have students read every book out there, nor can I take the time to read every new book written. But I can introduce the ones I think are relevant while also hanging on to some of the tried and true books I have used for a few years. The goal is to get kids to love reading, and it really doesn't matter if it is a "new" book or an "old" book. Lots of the books "my kids" read come from the books clubs because they are inexpensive. I, of course, try to make suggestions for books that would be more educational, but reading is reading and any reading practice will make a child improve, even if it is a comic book.
This discussion group has given me a quick way to find new books and I have used several successfully in my classroom. Given my limited amount of time I try to get recommendations from other teachers and from parents with school age children for books that are good.
