Yes!!!!This teacher reads

That was a serious question. I am very disturbed by the the number of non readers who are teachers. I have had more teachers come to me to ask for recommendations for books to read to their students particularly at the elementary level. I ask them what kind of children's lit class they had--answer: not very good and, and what do you like to read?-- answer: I don't like to read.

I also found it disturbing to see that in a recent NYT the results of SAT test scores which have remained fairly stable, in fact going up for many students was published.. This could because of a change in the methold of scoring several years ago. People in education had by far the lowest SAT scores. Does this correlate to reading? You bet. Students who are avid readers are known to do much better on standardized tests as a rule than non readers. I find this fact to be very disturbing.

All of this make a case for good library media specialist even stronger. Not only are they relied on for technology but they are the literature connection in schools.
