I'm curious about what people think of: How important is it to "try out" a picturebook on real kids during the review process? I do this only once in a while. I'll use something with a class or in storytime only if I already like it a lot...no sense sharing questionable books in those situations. I sometimes try them with my own kids, but their tastes and age levels are limited. I also know that children will sometimes respond enthusiastically to books that aren't especially noteworthy, depending on the presentation or the setting. And of course I only have the book for a month or so, limiting my opportunities for sharing it. For these reasons, I often tend to trust my own evaluation, without imput from kids. Are there other benefits to sharing picturebooks with live kids as part of the review process that I'm missing?
