The first annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture, "The Ins and Outs of Words," will be given by poet Karla Kuskin on Thursday, October 1, 7:30p.m., in the Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend this free, public lecture, as are all others interested in this historic event within the children's literature community. No tickets are required. There will be an ASL interpreter.

Parking will be available for $3.50 in the upper parking area of Helen C. White Hall; tell the attendant you are attending the Zolotow Lecture.

Following the lecture a reception will be held in Winkler Lounge, and autographing by honored guests will be possible.

Ms Kuskin received the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry in 1979. Ms. Kuskin's many books include "Dogs & Dragons, Trees & Dreams;" "The Philharmonic Gets Dressed;" "A Great Miracle Happened There;" and "The Sky Is Always in the Sky."

Preceding the Karla Kuskin's speech, Vera B. Williams will be presented with the first annual Charlotte Zolotow Award for her outstanding writing in the book "The Lucky Song." Keiko Kasza will receive Honor Book recognition for her writing in the book "Don't Laugh, Joe!"

Established in 1998, the lecture and award were named to honor Charlotte Zolotow, a distinguished children's book editor for 38 years with Harper Junior Books and author of more than 65 picture books including such classic works as "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" and "William's Doll." Returning to the campus where she was once a student of Professor Helen C. White, Ms. Zolotow will be an honored member of the audience on Thursday evening.

The Zolotow Lecture & Award are administered by the Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC), a library of the School of Education. The CCBC is a noncirculating library for adults with an academic, professional or career interest in children's or young adult literature.
