This is another fascinating discussion -- it's a pleasure to hear reviwers speak with clarity and passion about their craft. I have renewed appreciation for the thought that goes into every step of the process.
(One parenthetical reply to Janice's parenthetical query: I think it's not necessarily a strike against a book if it requires some further explication or "help" to be fully appreciated. I think of TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, and how opaque and difficult I found that book until I had the opportunity to study it within a classroom context.)
