In our discussion of picture book reviews, we haven't talked much about evaluating the illustrations, except a brief mention of the importance
(or lack there of) of identifying the medium an artist used to illustrate a book.

How important is it for a picture book reviewer to have a background in art? Does it matter if he or she recognizes various art styles or can tell the difference between gouache and acrylic paint? What sorts of things do you want a good picture book review to tell you about the book's illustrations?

In her article "To Get a Little More of the Picture: Reviewing Picture Books," Karla Kuskin states: "Too many critical (but not critical enough) eyes are impressed by self-proclaimed ART, overinflated, glossy work reflecting the graphic fashion of the moment but with little either personal or unique to recommend it."

Any responses?
