I love The Hundred Dresses. I loved it as a child and I love it now.
First grade seems a little young to me, although I did read it, one on one, to an eight-year-old girl, who was very moved by the story. I might wait until the second or third grade, but would be interested to hear how it goes if you decide to read it to your first graders.

What are your views on reading the book The Hundred Dresses as a read aloud to first graders at the beginning of school. Do you think it is appropriate for this level, why or why not?
