Hello to CCBC: I'm generally a lurker on this list, but wanted to pop in to say hello. This semester I am urging my children's lit class, my language arts/reading class, and my graduate class in reading to subscribe to CCBC and/or CHILDLIT. Several weeks ago I gave out a handout to all these students about the necessity of teachers and educators to read reviews, to become familiar with the various sources which talk about literature for youth.
I read Katharine's comment with much interest -- and certainly hope _my_ students don't simply stick with the titles they hear about from me... I make a concerted effort to have them read widely and diversely...and to explore the various journals (listed by KB) for reviews. With 5,000+ books released a year, all of us need assistance! One journal which I feel is much UNDER-publicized is BOOKLINKS... Yes, the librarians seem to know about it. But the teachers for whom I have done staff development over the past 5 years rarely have. Because of the "thematic" nature of BOOKLINKS, this journal has particular appeal to the classroom teacher.
I created a "handout" several years ago which lists the journals, giveing samples of reviews, and providing addresses and costs. In addition, I have on our library homepage (which now has a special section for children's literature sites -- yeah!) the site addresses for journals when available.
I certainly hope that the teachers that are born out of the Longwood program and my classes will read reviews...and any source which will help them to become more competent and knowledgeable in their selection of literature for their students.
This list is a wonderful opportunity and I offer my thanks regularly for your being here...
