It is clear that most of the teachers who subscribe to ccbc-net are probably careful and passionate readers and selecters of children's books.
(selectors? sp?)
Okay, what about parents? (And grandparents, for that matter.) I'm sure that parents on this list are as invested as the teachers and librarians in reviewing, selecting and reading good books for their children.
I know that Leonard Marcus does a lot of work for Parenting magazine, writing articles and reviews. (Thank goodness!) But many of the reviews I've read in publications for parents are merely a condensed plot summary, maybe one sentence about the illustrations, and a letter grade. Other
"reviews" read more like excerpts from publicity/press releases about the book being reviewed. And probably because of delicate relationships with advertisers, you're much more likely to see something I would put in the trash described as "delightful". (Really, I have snuck books into the trash: some of the "delightful" Disney Pooh confections, even Poky Little Puppy, despite U.N.'s hopes for its author....)
I do a lot of evangelizing of great books for kids with parents I know. Usually they haven't heard of the book I'm rhapsodizing about.
Well, my son is trying to help me with `this email by randomly pushing keys. Gotta gO.
