I've worked in systems where I've had to rely solely on reviews, and in others where I have the opportunity to see (and sometimes read) the actual books. I much prefer the latter; but when I've had to rely on reviews, I appreciated more in?pth reviews, particularly when there was something controversial about the book.
I imagine Arlene Sardine may end up being reviewed in professional journals of other fields (psychology, for example), and I'd be interested in seeing what those outside of the book world make of it. Someone could probably make a good political comparison of Arlene and various Middle Eastern groups who live to die for Allah in suicide bombing runs.
