I just finished reading Dear Genius last week but have been following and participating in the discussion. I think one of the things that really stood out for me about UN was her defense of books that she knew would be controversial such John Donovan's _If I get there it better be worth the try _ (Not sure about exact title), _In the night kitchen_, _Harriet the spy_ to just name a few. She seemed to know what kids would like and good literature and was willing to buck the flack.
There was an interesting article in the Sunday NYT magazine two weeks ago, I believe, about Raymond Carver and his editor who almost completely rewrote some of Carver's stories. I did not get the idea that UN would do that sort of thing. She seemed to give suggestions and explained how these changes would improve the work.
It did make the discussion more interesting to have Leonard Marcus with us. I now feel that not only do I know UN better but many of the authors of children's and ya literature that I have liked over the years.
Thank you ccbc-net for making these discussions possible. Michele Missner
