CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW LECTURE: Madison, Wisconsin Plan now to attend the first annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture, "The Ins and Outs of Words," to be given by Karla Kuskin on Thursday, October 1, 1998, 7:30pm in the Wisconsin Union Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon Street, Madison, Wisconsin.

Preceding the lecture, the first annual Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding picture book writing will be presented to Vera B. Williams for "Lucky Song" (Greenwillow, 1997).

Ms. Kuskin received the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry in 1979. "The Sky Is Always in the Sky" is a new collection of Ms. Kuskin's works published this spring for young children with full-color illustrations by Isabelle Dervaux
(HarperCollins, 1998). Ms. Kuskin's many other books include "The Philharmonic Gets Dressed" illustrated by Marc Simont (Charlotte Zolotow/Harper & Row, 1988) and "The Upstairs Cat" illustrated by Howard Fine (Clarion, 1997).

The lecture was named to honor Charlotte Zolotow, distinguished author of more than 70 children's books and for 38 years a children's book editor with Harper & Row. Ms. Zolotow attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison from 19336 during which time she studied with Professor Helen C. White.
