credit to editors

hi everyone,

i have lurked here since day 1 of this list. i couldn't stay silent any longer.

learning about the ins and outs of UN's mind, her commitments, her passions, her outbursts, all of these give me a sense of the complexity of her work and the work of any editor. reading nina ignatowicz's comments about the file folders passed at the end of each day gives me a sense of the collective effort. in our movie star and sports hero culture, it is heartening to allow authors and illustrators to be more human. recognizing that their work is a team effort is one way to do that.

marc aronson objects to giving credit because "there is something personal in the process of creation," but how does giving credit make the effort less personal? the point of credit is to honor people. we never honor each other enough.

i would prefer, in every book, to read the names of everyone involved in the book's production, including the typist, the computer support person, he who makes the coffee, she who orders carry-out for unexpected late dinners, the publicist and her assistant, the truck driver who delivers the boxes of books, and everyone else. in reading DEAR GENIUS and the comments on CCBC-NET, i begin to feel as i do at the end of every movie i see, awe and gratitude for the teamwork, the invisible labor behind the final product. i deliberately stay for the rock-bottom end of every movie in order to read the names of the people who made it happen. i'd love to be able to do that with a book too, every book.
