Actually, I think many editors write this way -- sitting down to compose a letter with their thoughts and feelings swirling around a recently read manuscript, but without a completely linear critique planned out. In this way we are like the authors themselves: often the act of writing is what focuses and clarifies our ideas. It's a creative process in and of itself.
And by the way -- remembering the days of carbon copies, I think the
"dying, dieing, dyeing (?)" thing is probably a delightful pre-spell-checker way of recognizing a probably typo, and getting around the necessity of retyping!
