Dear Genius

I am so glad we are having this discussion; I love this book for several reasons. First, because it shows the editorial process. It is fascinating for us as children's librarians to see, especially, since we are so familiar with many of these titles; to this day they are read regularly to children. Why aren't editors given credit in the book somewhere, other than an occasional dedication? Certainly they put a lot of work into forming the final product....

Secondly, as I read these letters about beloved books from my childhood, I was filled with gratitude for UN, that she cared so much about the child reader. I grew up in a small town in northern Minnesota, which had a lovely public library. These letters brought me right back to age 8,9,10, reading the Little House books; the Golden Name Day, etc. etc. This book connected me once again to these books, and, truly had an emotional response to it. Thanks, Ursula!

And finally, as a mom, to know that my four-year-old's current bedtime favorite is "Harold and the Purple Crayon", and before that, Goodnight Moon.....The legacy lives on. Hers was an awesome achievement.

It's a superb volume, with special meaning to me as a parent, a children's librarian, and a "former" child....
