I loved Fran Manushkin's comments about the editor's role, even though I think listing the editor makes sense -- not as a matter of "credit" so much as a matter of record. The feeling that the book was the author's, not the editor's, did come through strongly in reading Dear Genius, when UN would say repeatedly, I suggest thus and so, but really, dear author it is up to you and only do what makes sense to you, and if you feel strongly about this, leave it in, because you are the one that truly knows what's in your heart, etc. I loved that, and thought how much more likely I'd be as an author to accept that kind of criticism than the kind that leaves me with the feeling that what is being criticized is based not on what I wrote or was intending to write, but what the critic wanted me to write.
It seems to me I've heard stories, though, from authors who have been told "change this" or we won't publish your book. Any comments on this from either side of the desk?
