Dear Genius

I've enjoyed reading Dear Genius, and catching a rare glimpse into the mind of an editor. I too, noticed how UN "wooed" her authors, and was surprised at the number of times she tried to coax a book out of other people as well
(Marlo Thomas was one.) Is this usual in the publishing field? I 've assumed that editors receive piles of manuscripts and that they don't need to solicit books from people. Or perhaps UN recognized potential genius in people who were not writers? Perhaps some of you editors or publishers can respond, I'd be interested to know more about how this works.

Thank you, Leonard Marcus and all others who have commented. This discussion has been a real treat.

I am especially fascinated re the lengths UN went to woo her authors especially the tracking down of young John Steptoe.
