Books for young readers by Cynthia Rylant

Good question regarding the interpretation of Rylant's life in When I Was Young in the Mountains. When she lived in Kent she visited our classes many times and that was a question that sometimes came up. She was surprised, but pleased.

I think you will also find Rylant's Appalachia illustrated by Barry Moser offers yet another insight to the region.

Thanks, Carolyn, for giving us the info on Cynthia Rylant's web site
(http://www.rylant.com). I just visited it and can highly recommend it to others on CCBC-Net who are looking for more information about Cynthia Rylant and her books. I think you will find the section called "Her Books" (conveniently organized by genre) particularly illuminating, since you can read Rylant's brief commentaries on many of them and learn what inspired her to write each one. I also enjoyed the section entitled "How She Became a Writer."

One of the things that stands out when you look at her picture books is how much she has written about her childhood in Appalachia, beginning with her first book, "When I Was Young in the Mountains" (Dutton, 1982). I found it interesting that she wrote it with her childhood in the 1960s in mind, but that the illustrator, Diane Goode, chose to set it in a much earlier era. That sent me to re-read the book with this new insight in mind, to see how the 1960s could be recast so easily as early 20th century. Carolyn, do you know if Cynthia Rylant was surprised to see her childhood interpreted in this way?

Hello everyone! I returned from ALA in Washington D.C. about an hour ago and have joined the Cynthia Rylant discussion.

Just a bit of background information....

I have known Cyndi for about ten years. She lived in Kent, OH when I moved here to teach in the School of Library and Information Science. She graduated with a Master of Library Science degree several years before I came to Ohio. While she was in graduate school at Kent, her first children's book was published, When I Was Young in the Mountains illustrated by Diane Goode (Dutton, 1982) received a Caldecott Honor. Cyndi moved to the Pacific Northwest about four years ago and her westward trip was "highlighted" in a book published earlier this year titled Tulip Sees America (Blue Sky Press/Scholastic)

As K.T. mentioned, she is a versatile writer and has written board books, beginning readers, picture books, short story collections, poetry, nonfiction, novels for children and novels for teens. She has also illustrated board books and picture books. She is also very productive with eight titles set for release during fall 1998. For a preview of these new fall titles (and all her other books ) visit her personal website at http://www.rylant.com Cyndi's own life story, a scapbook of photos and a list of her books (with her comments on each one) can also be found at this site.

I'm looking forward to beginning the discussion with Cynthia Rylant's easy readers as K.T. suggested. I'd also be interested in your discussion of the and unique elements you see between the three series.

P.S. You might be interested to know that within the eight fall releases mentioned above there will be one new easy reader in each of the series of Henry and Mudge, Mr. Putter and Poppleton. If my count is correct, these new fall books will bring the totals to 18 Henry and Mudge, 8 Mr. Putter and 4 Poppleton.
