In many ways, THE ISLANDER reminded me of the Newbery Honor book, THE ANIMAL FAMILY by Randall Jarrell, (Pantheon, 1966). Both books have an almost square shape and cream colored cover, as well as the character of the mermaid, and the isolated setting. The two authors' use of language was also similar, using the narrative to describe things symbolically. Both books are the type of story that has layers; you take from it different layers, depending on your age. Penny Peck San Leandro Public Library, CA Pikly at aol.com
