Ginny Kruse, Megan Schliesman and I have just returned from the American Library Association conference in Washington, D.C. where "Smack" was the topic of several informal discussions between programs and meetings.
As we draw our June discussion of this book to a close, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the month's discussion, especially Michael Thorn from Great Britain, who was the first to bring Melvin Burgess's book to our attention on his web page ACHUKA
(http://www.webplus.co.uk/~achuka/).
We also appreciate the efforts of those of you who went to a great deal of trouble to find and read the brand new U.S. edition, as well as those who shared with us the comments of teen readers and former heroin addicts. It's been interesting to read the various points of view on this book which itself uses various points of view to tell a story.
Since "Smack" has attracted a lot of attention, we know people on both sides of the ocean will continue to discuss it for a long time. Here on CCBC-Net, however, we will now turn our attention toward our subject for July: the books of Cynthia Rylant.
