Congratulations to Nina on an outstanding analysis of The Islander. I also thoroughly enjoyed this novel and am still waiting for some of my students to complete it so that we may debate the genre to which it belongs. My strongest instinct says realistic fiction but the mermaid and the key hint at fantasy.
My 23 students in my graduate course, Reading Interests of Children, are following this listserv as part of an assignment. I appreciate all of the thoughtful commentary to date and look forward to more. I am presently rereading some of Cynthia's older novels and hope that we will discuss them as well.
