I had heard once that Cynthia Rylant didn't like the pictures for her
"When I Was Young in the Mountains", not so much because they were set in an earlier era but because everybody and everything was so clean and neat and tidy in those illustrations. I had heard also that that's why she selected Stephen Gammell for her next book The Relatives Came
-- because he did so well with messy people. (He used many in his own family and himself as models).
