Rylant's use of language to express raw emotions, both tender and harsh, is beautifully captured in "Something Permanent". The language whispers, pauses, offers glimpses into our daily lives that are both honest and elegant. The black and white photographs add dignity to the most humble of settings or feelings. Together the language and visual images create highly readable and reachable poetry. Middle school and high school students who are often required to do assignments where a photo is used to create a story, write a poem etc. would do well to use Rylant's book as a fine example of poetry and photography that work well together as story.
In "Soda Jerk", Rylant is able to capture an essence of the many people, experiences and ideas as seen through the eyes of the young soda jerk. The portraits she creates are honest, humorous, and poignant. I often caught myself thinking "I know this person". I bought four copies of this book--three to give to members of my family and one for myself.
I like reading one Rylant poem at a sitting, reflecting upon it and then letting my thoughts and emotions carry me has doubled the pleasure. Because each poem is so exquisite each reading can bring forth new insight or feelings. Mary
