In July we plan to discuss the books of Cynthia Rylant, a prolific and versatile writer and, more recently, illustrator of children's books. Joining our discussion this month will be Carolyn Brodie of Kent State University, who is very knowledgeable about Cynthia Rylant and her books.
As an author, Cynthia Rylant has produced quite a wide range of books, from board books to novels for teenagers. She won the Newbery Medal in 1993 for "Missing May" (A Richard Jackson Book/Orchard) but she is perhaps best known to children for her easy readers about Henry and Mudge.
Let's begin our discussion of Cynthia Rylant's books by looking at her books for preschool and early elementary-school-aged children. In addition to her Henry and Mudge series, she also has two other easy-reader series: Mr Putter & Tabby and the Poppleton series. What makes Cynthia Rylant's easy readers distinctive?
