My grandaughter, age 4, asked me to read one of the Henry and Mudge stories every night. I was having eye trouble, so I often paused a some of the words - which she immediately filled in for me. I assumes it was due to her having heard them so often, but, I decided we needed to take turns reading each page. I was astounded at the speed with which she read her page. It was apparent that she had learned to read - from being read to, from following as Mom or grandma read to her, and - by her delight in the stories themselves. Now, at 12 yeas old, she is such an avid reader (and a straight A student) that we sometimes have to tell her she needs to do other activities (she is now doing counted cross stitch and canvas projects) I give stories like C. Rylant's the credit. By the way, if you are a dog or cat lover, you simply must see her Dog Heaven and Cat Heaven picture books. One more quickie. came out, I sent a copy to Hymn Cronin (the actor), suggesting that that was a perfect one for him and Jessica Tandy to do. Before it reached him, she died. I never heard from him, but I still believe it would have been perfect. Any comments?
