There is a nostalgia element to the Islander, but I still think that it would appeal to intermediate students (4-7th grade), and the rest of the population. It is a fairly new book, so I don't know if you have had any responses from kids about this book. I have read Missing May, and am now listening to it. It is only two cassettes, but I have tried to listen for some of the same elements that are in the Islander and they are there. There is a type of religiosity underpining the book. Going to a seance, seeing May appearing in other forms. Although it is clearly not the magical realism of the Islander, the many of the same elements are there which is understandable seeing that Cynthia Rylant does have certain themes that she revisits.
