I enjoyed reading Barbara Scotto's comments about Rylant's work. I have always found the writing to be honest and straightforward with stories told with so much grace it is almost unbelieveable (I have heard her call writing.... "finding those right words in the air"). That she does little editing (or that her work receiving little editing) is not surprising, since she writes from the heart.

Rylant has deposited numerous manuscripts at Kent State University. A partial listing of what is available in Special Collections and Archives can be found at (http://www.library.kent.edu/speccoll/) by clicking on Special Collections at the left of the screen, then Children's Collections on the right and finally Cynthia Rylant Collection. There is only a list...not the actual manuscripts...but if you're ever in the area! Our students here have been fascinated to compare a finished book with the yellow legal pad handwritten manuscripts. (We also have Virginia Hamilton's manuscripts.)

Rylant has a good description of how she works in the Meet the Newbery Author video.* Rylant briefly describes how she became a writier in the video and on her website mentioned early in this discussion (www.rylant.com). Her autobiographies also offer insight and they are But I'll Be Back Again (Orchard, 1989; Beechtree (pb), 1993) and Best Wishes (Richard C. Owen Publishers, 1992)
