Good Morning- Having just "Rushed" Smack through cataloging, I took the cold plunge into exploring a world that is still shocking many of us. Even after reading the first five pages, I recognize Burgess's somewhat clinical and objective portrayal of the kinds of lives that our media, our neighborhoods, our friends and some of us are experiencing.

Although I am only 30 pages into the book now, I feel that I am watching a contemporary Shakespearean drama where the stage for a great tragedy is being set up for viewer. On the one hand I sense that ominous events will occur, they will be ugly and painful, I am still compelled to be part of these lives. I will add more comments about my impressions of Smack if the discussion is still going on when I'm finished with the book.

Thank you everyone--your comments are thoughtful, provocative and your passion for not only the literary qualities of the book but the actual content are so very valuable.
