CCBC-ers: The "N.Y. Timee Book Review" for 14 June 1998 has, on p.9, a review of Wm. Finnegan's "Cold New World." The review jumped my mind to "Smack" and you may wish to read it--and then the book. One line in particular hit home: "We see how and why these people make their wretched choices and the seeming inevitability of it all: it's not that their [the young people's] dreams reach beyonf the grasp of their capabilities, it's that they don't dream at all."
Check it out.
